A new report released last week (29 January 2025) by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation has revealed that in 2022/23, 3 in every 10 children in the UK in poverty, with this figure increasing from 2021/22.
Overall, the picture of poverty in the UK makes for fairly grim reading, with the headline statistic being that over 1 in 5 people in the UK (21%) are in poverty.
Of these 14.3 million people:
8.1 million are working-age adults
4.3 million are children
1.9 million are pensioners.
In terms of changes, the report found that child poverty did rise slightly, however pensioner poverty fell slightly and working-age adult poverty stayed the same.
Despite some more positive news, this still means that a large number of people are in a situation where they will be struggling to pay their bills, buy food or clothing.
The report found that there are several groups in the UK in particular who have unacceptably high rates of poverty:
Families with children
Minority ethnic groups
Disabled people
Informal carers
People in workless households
Social and private renters.
Our partner charities will be working harder than ever to try and support these at-risk groups.
And that's why we are determined to do what we can, with the help of our supporters, to raise money in order to provide people with clothing gift cards. Doing this in conjunction with our partners means that these will end up being given to those who are most in need.
